In-Depth Review
Revolutionizing the Second-Hand Market
Better World Books (BWB) operates on a unique triple-bottom-line model. Since its inception, the company has sought to prove that a business can be both profitable and deeply beneficial to society. By sourcing books from library systems, university campuses, and individual donations, BWB prevents millions of tons of high-quality material from entering landfills. To date, they have diverted over 400 million books and raised millions of dollars for global literacy partners like Books for Africa and Room to Read.
Environmental Impact of the Circular Economy
The publishing industry is one of the most resource-intensive sectors, involving high water usage and carbon emissions from logging and shipping. By prioritizing used copies, Better World Books significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with reading. Their fulfillment centers utilize energy-efficient practices, and they offer carbon-neutral shipping options to customers worldwide. This circular approach ensures that the energy already invested in creating a book continues to provide value for decades.
