Follow the money

Who owns which brand?

Most shelves are narrower than they look: a handful of conglomerates sit behind hundreds of familiar labels. Use this index to trace a brand to its parent company, see the rest of that portfolio, and decide whether the ownership changes how you shop.

Frequently asked questions

Why does brand ownership matter?+

A brand can be certified cruelty-free while its parent company sells in markets that require animal testing, or funds lobbying that a shopper would not want to support. Ownership tells you where the money ultimately goes.

Does a parent company automatically make a brand unethical?+

No. Plenty of independently run brands keep their standards under large owners, and acquisition can bring resources for better sourcing. We record the relationship and let you weigh it against the brand's own score.

How we score brands
How current is this data?+

Ownership records are reviewed on a rolling basis and each entry links to its source. Acquisitions can take weeks to be publicly confirmed, so treat very recent deals as provisional.
