In-Depth Review
Handcrafted Heritage Meets Modern Ethics
Sloane & Sons, an emerging indie brand out of the UK, focuses on high-end games made from renewable natural rubber. While many chess sets are either cheap plastic or expensive, endangered hardwoods, this set uses FSC-certified rubberwood and natural latex. This ensures that the trees are not cut down but 'tapped' for material, allowing the forest to remain intact. This dual Chess and Checkers set is designed with a minimalist aesthetic that appeals to the stylish college student who values both form and function.
The Circular Guarantee
One of the most innovative features of Sloane & Sons is their 'Eternal Piece' program. If you lose a piece or the set becomes damaged, they provide free replacements. More importantly, they offer a 50% trade-in credit for any set returned to them after its usable life. They then refurbish these sets for donation to schools or community centers, or compost the natural rubber components in an industrial facility. This 'take-back' initiative is rare in the high-end board game niche.
The set is lightweight and features a roll-up board, making it perfect for students living on the go. Whether playing in a campus cafe or a park, the set is weather-resistant and incredibly tactile. The matte finish of the natural rubber pieces provides a premium feel without the environmental guilt of ivory or tropical hardwoods.
