In-Depth Review
The Pioneers of Human-Grade Pet Food
The Honest Kitchen was the first pet food brand to receive a legal 'human-grade' claim from the FDA and AAFCO. This means every ingredient used, from the free-range chicken to the organic kale, is handled in a facility that produces food for people. By maintaining these strict sanitary and quality standards, the brand ensures a level of safety and nutritional integrity that traditional kibble plants cannot match. The dehydrated format allows for a shelf-stable product that retains the natural enzymes and vitamins of fresh food.
Sustainable Dehydration Technology
Dehydration is one of the most sustainable ways to preserve food. By removing only the water, The Honest Kitchen significantly reduces the weight and volume of the food, which lowers the carbon footprint of shipping. One 10lb box rehydrates to become 40lbs of fresh food. This efficiency reduces packaging waste and transportation emissions compared to heavy canned wet food or bulky bags of kibble.
| Component | Quality Standard |
|---|---|
| Chicken | Free-Range / Human-Grade |
| Packaging | FSC Certified Paperboard |
| Processing | Low-Heat Dehydration |
| Ingredients | Non-GMO Project Verified |
Commitment to Animal Welfare and Sourcing
The Honest Kitchen focuses on sourcing free-range chicken, which aligns with higher animal welfare standards than industrial factory farming. They avoid ingredients like carrageenan, fillers, and meat by-products. Their supplier code of conduct is rigorous, ensuring that every vegetable and protein source meets specific ethical and environmental criteria. As a certified B Corp, they are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.
Because this food is dehydrated, you simply add warm water, wait three minutes, and serve. It is ideal for senior dogs or those with dental issues who require a softer texture.
"We believe that pets deserve food made to the same standards as human food. If we wouldn't eat it, why should they?" - Lucy Postins, Founder
The brand also uses FSC Certified cardboard for their boxes, ensuring that the paper products used in their packaging are sourced from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.
