Chlorine Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite): why to avoid them and what to use instead

Releases irritant chloramine gas when mixed with ammonia or acid, forms chlorinated by-products in wastewater, and is a leading cause of household poisoning calls.

The short answer

Highly effective and cheap, but the mixing hazard is genuine and oxygen bleach handles most household whitening. Keep chlorine bleach for specific disinfecting jobs, never combine it with anything, and ventilate.

What regulators have actually done

Sold freely but classified as corrosive above certain concentrations, with mandatory hazard labelling in the EU under CLP and EPA registration as an antimicrobial in the US.

The mixing hazard is the main risk

Bleach plus ammonia (in some glass cleaners and urine) releases chloramine gas; bleach plus acid (limescale removers, vinegar) releases chlorine gas. Both cause severe respiratory injury at household concentrations. This is the single most common serious cleaning-product accident, and it is entirely avoidable by never mixing products.

Oxygen bleach does most of the work

Sodium percarbonate releases hydrogen peroxide in water, whitening fabric and lifting organic stains without chlorinated by-products, and it is colour-safe on many fabrics. It's slower and needs warm water, which is the only real trade-off.
