SLS & SLES: why to avoid them and what to use instead

The short answer
SLS is an irritant, not a toxin — the cancer rumours are unfounded. The genuine issue is 1,4-dioxane residue in SLES, and reputable manufacturers vacuum-strip it. If you have eczema, dermatitis or a sensitive scalp, switching to glucoside surfactants is worth it.

What regulators have actually done
Neither is banned. New York State caps 1,4-dioxane in personal care at 1 ppm, which effectively forces manufacturers to strip the contaminant from ethoxylated surfactants sold there.
Irritation versus toxicity
SLS is used in dermatology as a standard positive control to provoke skin irritation in patch tests, which tells you exactly how it behaves on a compromised barrier. That is a very different claim from carcinogenicity, which no regulator supports.
The 1,4-dioxane question
Ethoxylation, the process that makes SLES milder than SLS, generates 1,4-dioxane as a byproduct. It can be removed with vacuum stripping, but it is never declared on labels because it is a contaminant rather than an ingredient. Brands complying with the New York limit are the practical proxy for a clean supply.
