Talc: why to avoid them and what to use instead
Talc deposits can occur alongside asbestos geologically, and asbestos contamination in cosmetic talc has been repeatedly detected and litigated.

What regulators have actually done
Talc is permitted in cosmetics but must be asbestos-free; the EU bans it in powder products for children under three in loose form. The US FDA has proposed standardised asbestos testing methods for cosmetic talc after repeated positive findings.
The contamination problem
Talc and asbestos form in the same geological conditions, so mines can yield both. Historically, testing methods were not sensitive enough to detect low-level tremolite contamination, and independent laboratories have since found asbestos in retail cosmetic talc. Brands that publish batch-level asbestos testing are the ones addressing this directly.
Inhalation is the main route
Loose powders create airborne dust; pressed powders far less so. If you keep talc products, prefer pressed formats and avoid shaking powder near an infant's face — respiratory exposure is the documented risk in paediatric guidance.
