In-Depth Review
Revolutionizing the Second-Hand Market
Better World Books (BWB) was founded on the principle that books should never be thrown away. As a for-profit 'social enterprise,' they have pioneered a model that turns discarded library books and individual donations into a massive resource for global literacy. By focusing on the resale of used media, they embody the 'Reuse' pillar of sustainability, significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with new book production.
Environmental Impact of Used Media
Every used book purchased prevents the consumption of approximately 2,700 liters of water and the emission of several kilograms of CO2 required to produce a new copy. BWB manages an extensive logistics network that collects books from over 4,000 library systems and thousands of university campuses, ensuring these items find new homes rather than being pulped or sent to landfills.
- Over 35 million books diverted from landfills to date
- $33 million raised for literacy and libraries
- Carbon-balanced shipping on all domestic orders
- Partnerships with Feed the Children and Books for Africa
Commitment to Literacy
BWB doesn't just sell books; they fund the future of reading. A portion of every sale is directed to non-profit partners who work to improve literacy rates in high-need areas. This creates a double-positive impact: the buyer receives an affordable book, and the transaction funds education for someone in need.
| Impact Metric | Achievement |
|---|---|
| Books Donated | 26 Million+ |
| Funds Raised | $33 Million+ |
| Landfill Diversion | 400,000 Tons+ |
"We believe that education and access to books are basic human rights. Our business exists to facilitate that access while protecting our physical environment."
While BWB also sells new books, they prioritize their used inventory. Their website provides transparent reporting on the condition of every used book, allowing consumers to make informed choices about 'Good,' 'Very Good,' or 'Like New' items, extending the lifecycle of printed media indefinitely.
Pros
- ✓Massive selection of affordable used titles
- ✓Directly supports global literacy programs
- ✓Excellent carbon-neutral shipping practices
Cons
- ✗Used book condition can be subjective
- ✗Shipping times can be slower than major retailers
