In-Depth Review
Social Impact Through Media
Better World Books (BWB) was built on the premise that business can be a force for good. Unlike traditional retailers, BWB was founded by college students who saw an opportunity to fund literacy by selling textbooks. Today, it has evolved into a global movement that has raised over $33 million for literacy and libraries.
The Triple Bottom Line
As a B Corp, Better World Books is legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Their 'Carbon Neutral Shipping' option allows consumers to offset the transit emissions of their media purchases, making them a leader in the digital media space for environmental accountability.
| Category | Performance |
|---|---|
| Books Donated | 35 Million+ |
| Funds Raised | $33 Million+ |
| Recycling Rate | 100% of unsellable books |
Transparency and Labor
BWB maintains high standards for its warehouse employees, providing living wages and safe working conditions. They are transparent about their donation partners, which include Books for Africa and the National Center for Families Learning. This transparency ensures that the 'social' aspect of their brand is more than just marketing.
- Direct support for global literacy.
- Carbon-balanced shipping options.
- Commitment to zero-waste.
"We believe that education and access to books are basic human rights."
The company also works closely with library systems to manage their discarded materials, ensuring that instead of being thrown away, these public resources are either sold to new homes or recycled into other paper goods.
