In-Depth Review
Cultivating Empathy Through Diverse Stories
OurShelves was founded to solve a common problem for parents, educators, and librarians: the difficulty of finding high-quality picture books that feature diverse characters as protagonists, rather than just side characters or historical figures. This subscription service focuses on 'mirror and window' books, ensuring children see themselves reflected in stories while gaining a window into the lives of others.
Rigorous Curation Process
Every book included in an OurShelves box is vetted by a team of experts, including librarians, teachers, and child psychologists. They look for stories that avoid stereotypes and provide authentic representation of LGBTQ+ families, people of color, and individuals with disabilities. By shopping through OurShelves, you are supporting a woman-owned small business that actively advocates for changes in the publishing industry.
