In-Depth Review
Why This Set Changes New Year Play Forever
Most holiday role-play kits are packed with cheap plastic, single-use accessories, and non-recyclable packaging — the antithesis of ethical gifting. KODOMO’s Oshōgatsu Set is a direct ethical dupe for mass-market pretend-play bundles, offering a heirloom-quality alternative that’s completely plastic-free, vegan, and crafted from FSC-certified Japanese hinoki and beech wood.
Inside the sturdy gift-worthy wooden box you’ll find 12 hand-finished pieces: a miniature osechi-ryōri three-tiered jubako (lacquerware-style stacking box), two wooden daruma dolls (one red, one gold), a miniature kagami mochi stand with two mochi pucks and a daidai (Japanese bitter orange), a hand-painted wooden maneki-neko, a mini hagoita (battledore) pad, and a fabric furoshiki wrapping cloth (organic cotton, naturally dyed). Every item is finished with plant-based oils — no lacquers, no glues, no animal-derived ingredients.
The set comes with a bilingual (English/Japanese) story card explaining the meaning of each piece, encouraging cultural empathy and language curiosity. Designed for children aged 3–8, it also meets ASTM and CE safety standards.
Ethical & Sustainability Highlights
- Material: FSC-certified Japanese hinoki and beech; organic cotton furoshiki; plant-based oil finish.
- Packaging: Zero plastic — uses a FSC-certified wooden storage box with cotton ribbon closure.
- Labor: Handmade in a family-owned workshop in Gifu Prefecture, Japan; artisans paid above-living wage (Fair Trade principles audited by third-party).
- Carbon: Forest-grown hinoki sequesters carbon; brand offsets shipping via 1% for the Planet partner.
- Animal Welfare: No animal-derived materials, glues, or dyes — certified vegan by PETA.
