In-Depth Review
Superior Odor Control with a Focus on Feline Health
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra is a unique formulation that combines the heavy non-tracking granules of Classic litter with a medium grain clay. The result is an exceptional clumping litter that prevents moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray. For many cat owners, the primary ethical concern is the health of the animal; this litter is 99.9% dust-free and hypo-allergenic, making it one of the safest options for cats with asthma or sensitive respiratory systems.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Material | Sodium Bentonite Clay |
| Scent | Unscented |
| Clump Strength | Very Firm |
From a sustainability perspective, Dr. Elsey's acknowledges the challenges of clay mining but offsets this through philanthropic efforts. The company is family-owned and a major supporter of the American Shelter Dog Network and various feline health research foundations. The heavy grain ensures that the litter stays in the box rather than on your cat’s paws, reducing waste and mess throughout the home.
"Finally a litter that doesn't leave a cloud of dust every time I scoop. My cat's sneezing stopped almost immediately after switching." — Verified Buyer
Sustainability Note
While effective, bentonite clay is typically strip-mined. If your priority is 100% renewable materials, consider a corn or wood-based alternative, though they may offer less odor control for multi-cat households.
This product is ideal for multi-cat families who struggle with mechanical litter boxes or heavy odor issues. Because it uses no plant-based proteins, it does not attract bugs and is less likely to grow mold in humid environments compared to corn or wheat litters. It provides a compromise between high-performance functionality and a commitment to pet health over synthetic fragrances and chemicals.
Pros
- ✓Excellent odor control for multi-cat homes
- ✓Almost zero dust compared to competitors
- ✓Hard clumps make cleaning easy
Cons
- ✗Bentonite clay is not an eco-friendly material
- ✗Very heavy bags can be difficult to lift
