How to use this, and what it means

There are hundreds of sustainability logos and only a fraction are backed by an independent audit. This lookup explains what each label actually verifies, what it deliberately says nothing about, and how to confirm a company genuinely holds it rather than borrowing the artwork.

Three tiers of certification

Labels are not equal. Sorting them into tiers is the fastest way to judge a pack at a glance.

  • Third-party audited — an outside body inspects against published criteria and maintains a public directory (B Corp, Fairtrade, GOTS, FSC, Leaping Bunny, OEKO-TEX, USDA Organic).
  • Membership or pledge schemes — a company signs up and self-reports, with limited verification.
  • Brand-owned marks — designed in-house, no external rules, no revocation process.

What every label leaves out

A certification covers a defined scope and nothing more. USDA Organic says nothing about labour conditions. Leaping Bunny says nothing about vegan ingredients. FSC covers forestry, not the chemicals used in processing. Fairtrade covers trading terms for specific commodities, not the whole product. Reading the scope is the difference between an informed purchase and a comforting one.

How to verify a logo in under a minute

Every serious certifier publishes a searchable licensee directory. Search the brand — not the parent company, and not the product name — and check the certificate is current and covers the range you are buying. If the brand does not appear, the logo means nothing regardless of how official it looks.

Frequently asked questions

Which certifications are the strongest?+

Ones with published criteria, an independent auditor, a public licensee directory and a revocation process. B Corp, Fairtrade, GOTS, FSC, Leaping Bunny, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and USDA Organic all meet that bar within their own scope.

Compare all certifications
Does a certified logo apply to the whole brand?+

Usually not. Certification is often granted per product, per range or per factory, so a brand can display a mark legitimately while most of its catalogue is uncertified.

What does B Corp certification actually measure?+

A company-wide assessment of governance, workers, community, environment and customers, scored against a minimum threshold and re-verified every three years. It is a company standard, not a product standard.

Is the PETA bunny the same as Leaping Bunny?+

No. PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies relies largely on a signed company declaration, while Leaping Bunny requires supplier monitoring and independent audits, making it the stricter of the two.

Can a certification be withdrawn?+

Yes — licences lapse, audits fail and companies are removed. That is exactly why checking the certifier's live directory beats trusting printed packaging.

How do certifications affect an EthiCompare score?+

Audited certifications are the heaviest single input in our 0–100 score, weighted by scope: a company-wide audited standard counts for more than a single certified product.
