Wild Earth Clean Protein Dog Food vs Dr. Lyon's Raw Superfood Topper for Dogs

Overview

Wild Earth Clean Protein Dog Food and Open Farm Dr. Lyon's Raw Superfood Topper represent two distinct ethical approaches in pet nutrition. Wild Earth (ethics 96/100, $$$) is a vegan, lab-grown protein kibble that targets plant-based pet parents, carrying certifications from PETA, 1% for the Planet, and being cruelty-free and vegan. Open Farm Dr. Lyon's Topper (ethics 94/100, $$$) is a freeze-dried raw food topper made from humane-certified animal proteins, with B Corp, Ocean Wise, and Global Recycled Standard certifications. Both are premium-priced but serve different dietary philosophies.

Ethics Diff

Wild Earth's strengths lie in its completely animal-free formulation—it avoids all animal agriculture's carbon footprint and ethical concerns about slaughter. Its PETA and vegan certifications are rare in dog food. Open Farm focuses on sourcing transparency and regenerative practices: Certified Humane ensures animals lived well, B Corp verifies social and environmental accountability, and Ocean Wise confirms sustainable seafood. However, Open Farm still uses animal products, which may conflict with vegans or those avoiding animal farming entirely. Wild Earth edges ahead in pure animal welfare ethics, but Open Farm excels in holistic sustainability.

Everyday Use

Wild Earth is a complete and balanced kibble, ideal as a full diet for adult dogs—just pour and serve. It works best for dogs without major allergies to plant proteins and for owners who want a simple, dry food. Open Farm's topper is designed to be mixed with existing dry food or used as a snack; it's freeze-dried raw, which retains nutrients but requires rehydration or careful storage. For picky eaters or dogs needing extra protein, the topper is versatile, but it's not a complete meal unless combined with a base diet. Both are shelf-stable and convenient, though Open Farm's raw component may need more mindful handling.

Value

Both are priced at $$$, placing them in the premium bracket. Wild Earth offers a complete meal in one bag, so its cost per serving is straightforward. Open Farm's topper is an add-on, meaning total cost can increase depending on how much you use—it's a supplement, not a full replacement. For owners wanting a single ethical food, Wild Earth provides more direct value. For those already using a basic kibble and wanting ethical enhancement, Open Farm delivers targeted impact.

Bottom line

If you prioritize zero animal exploitation and a vegan lifestyle, Wild Earth is the clear winner. If you prefer supporting humane animal farming, ocean sustainability, and recycled packaging while keeping a raw element in your dog's diet, Open Farm is excellent. Both are top-tier ethical choices, but Wild Earth's perfect animal-free stance gives it a slight edge in overall ethics score.
