Linen (Flax)
Fiber from the flax plant — rain-fed, low-input, and biodegradable when undyed.
What it is
Linen is spun from the stalk of the flax plant, mostly grown in a narrow belt across France, Belgium and the Netherlands where rainfall alone supports the crop.
Why it matters
European flax needs essentially no irrigation and little fertiliser, the whole plant is used, and pure linen composts at end of life. The main variable is how the stalk is retted — dew retting is low-impact, chemical retting is not.

- Rain-fed in its main growing region; minimal irrigation
- Low pesticide need and every part of the plant is used
- Extremely durable — good linen outlasts cotton by years
- Biodegradable if undyed and unblended
Trade-offs
- Chemical retting and heavy softening finishes undo much of the benefit
- Blended with viscose or polyester in cheaper 'linen-look' fabric
- Higher price and wrinkles readily

European Flax or Masters of Linen certification, '100% linen' rather than 'linen blend', and dew-retted or enzyme-retted processing.

Generally yes on water and chemical inputs, especially European rain-fed flax versus irrigated conventional cotton. Durability widens the gap further per year of wear.

The fiber is plant-based. Check trims, interlinings and any beeswax or milk-protein finishes on specialty fabrics.
