In-Depth Review
Softness Meets Social Justice
Who Gives A Crap (WGAC) started with a simple realization: billions of people lack access to a toilet. Since 2012, this B Corp has redefined the household paper industry by shifting the focus from virgin forest pulp to sustainable bamboo. Their bamboo toilet paper is designed to be as soft as conventional premium brands while being significantly more sustainable and socially responsible.
Why Bamboo?
Traditional toilet paper is a major driver of deforestation, with millions of trees cut down daily for a product that is used once and flushed. Bamboo is a grass, not a tree. It grows incredibly fast, requires no pesticides, and can be harvested annually without killing the plant. This makes it a regenerative resource that sequesters more carbon than an equivalent stand of trees.
- 50% of profits donated to build toilets in developing countries.
- Plastic-free: Each roll is individually wrapped in colorful, recyclable paper.
- No inks or dyes: The paper is elemental chlorine-free (ECF).
| Impact Metric | WGAC Bamboo | Virgin Forest Paper |
|---|---|---|
| Tree Loss | Zero | High |
| Social Return | 50% Profits Donated | Corporate Profit |
| Packaging | 100% Plastic-Free | Plastic Wrap |
"We believe that a clean bum and a clean world shouldn't be mutually exclusive. We're here to help the world, one flush at a time." - Simon Griffiths, CEO
Did you know? WGAC has donated over $10 million AUD to sanitation partners across the globe, helping to provide clean water and hygiene to millions.
The manufacturing process for WGAC bamboo paper is optimized for water reduction. Because bamboo fibers are naturally strong, the paper achieves a 3-ply thickness without the heavy chemical processing required for recycled paper blends. The lack of scent or dyes makes it an excellent choice for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies. While the individual wrapping of rolls is often discussed, it is done to maintain hygiene without using plastic outer wraps, and the colorful designs are a signature of the brand's cheerful approach to a serious global issue.
Pros
- ✓Industry-best social impact (50% profit donation)
- ✓Stronger and softer than recycled paper
- ✓Beautiful, plastic-free packaging
Cons
- ✗Initial price point is high (minimum bulk purchase)
- ✗Individual wrapping may feel like extra paper waste to some
