PU Vegan Leather
Polyurethane coating over a fabric backing — animal-free, but a plastic.
What it is
Most 'vegan leather' is polyurethane laminated onto a polyester or cotton backing. Water-based PU replaces the solvent (DMF) used in older processes and is the version worth paying for.
Why it matters
It removes animal use and the heavy-metal tanning of conventional leather, but it is fossil-derived, sheds microplastics as it degrades, and rarely lasts as long. PVC-based 'leatherette' is worse again and should be avoided.

Trade-offs
- Fossil-derived plastic that sheds microplastics as it cracks
