Recycled Paper & Card

What it is
Recycled paper is manufactured from collected waste paper, de-inked and re-pulped. Post-consumer waste (PCW) content is the number that matters; 'recycled' alone can mean mill scrap that never left the factory.
Why it matters
Every tonne of PCW paper avoids virgin pulp and the energy of pulping wood. Process chlorine free (PCF) or totally chlorine free (TCF) bleaching avoids dioxin-forming chlorine compounds in mill effluent.
Upsides
- Cuts virgin pulp demand and pressure on forests
- Lower energy and water use than virgin paper
- Widely recyclable again — fiber can cycle 5–7 times
- PCF/TCF options avoid chlorine bleaching
Trade-offs
- Fibers shorten each cycle, so some virgin input is always needed
- De-inking creates sludge that needs disposal
- Low 'recycled' percentages are often unstated mill scrap

- Disposal in your area
- Ask your local collection service about the finished item, not just its main material. Blends, coatings and attachments may change how it can be collected. Do not assume a recyclable or compostable claim applies to your household system.

Is bamboo paper better than recycled paper?+
Recycled generally wins because it needs no new crop at all. Bamboo is the better choice where recycled fiber can't meet the strength or hygiene requirement.
Does 'FSC' mean recycled?+
No. FSC Mix and FSC 100% cover responsibly managed virgin forest. Only FSC Recycled indicates reclaimed fiber.
