Molded Paper Pulp

Recycled fiber pressed into protective packaging — kerbside recyclable and home compostable.

What it is

Waste paper and board are slurried, pressed into a mould and dried into rigid protective packaging. It replaces expanded polystyrene and plastic clamshells in electronics, cosmetics and produce.

Why it matters

It is one of the few packaging swaps that is both widely recyclable and home compostable, with no special infrastructure needed. Watch for plastic windows, foil layers and PFAS grease-proofing, which void both routes.

Upsides

  • Made largely from post-consumer recycled fiber
  • Kerbside recyclable and home compostable when uncoated
  • Direct replacement for polystyrene protective packing
  • Low-cost and manufacturable regionally

Trade-offs

  • PFAS grease-proofing is still used on some food-contact pulp

  • Not suitable for wet or high-humidity contents

What to look for on the label

'PFAS-free' or 'no added fluorochemicals', high post-consumer content, and packaging with no plastic window or laminate.

Is molded pulp really compostable at home?+

Uncoated pulp is — it breaks down in months. Anything with a glossy coating, wax or grease barrier should go to recycling instead.

Why does PFAS show up in paper packaging?+

It is used as a cheap grease and moisture barrier in food packaging. Several regions now ban it, but it persists in imported products.
