Bioplastics (PLA)

Plant-derived plastic that only composts in industrial conditions.

What it is

Polylactic acid is polymerised from fermented plant starch, usually corn or sugarcane. It looks and behaves like conventional plastic but is bio-based rather than fossil-based.

Why it matters

PLA cuts fossil feedstock use, but 'compostable' on the label almost always means industrial composting at 55–60 °C. In a home bin, in the ocean, or in landfill it behaves much like ordinary plastic — and it contaminates PET recycling streams.

Upsides

  • Renewable feedstock instead of petroleum
  • Lower production emissions than virgin PET
  • Genuinely breaks down in industrial composting
  • Useful where food contamination rules out recycling

Trade-offs

  • Needs industrial facilities most regions don't have
  • Contaminates PET recycling if binned wrongly
  • Competes with food crops for land
  • 'Biodegradable' claims are routinely overstated

What to look for on the label

TÜV OK compost HOME (not just INDUSTRIAL), EN 13432 or BPI certification, and confirmation your council actually accepts it.

Can I put PLA in my home compost?+

Only if it carries an OK compost HOME mark. Standard PLA needs sustained industrial heat and will sit intact in a garden heap for years.

Is bioplastic better than recycled plastic?+

Usually not for packaging. Recycled PET has a well-established collection stream; PLA mostly ends up in landfill or contaminates recycling.
